One stage, eleven hours and 40,000 visitors: 538 King’s Day 2026 kept Breda’s Chasséveld in constant motion. From the first performances in full daylight to the fireworks finale, I captured the artists, the audience and the scale of the event.

The story
The strength of 538 King’s Day lies in its pace. Artists follow one another in rapid succession, while the same stage continually takes on a different character. Photographing it means constantly shifting perspective: from large and graphic to close, human and unexpected.
In daylight, the series revolves around colour, movement and interaction with the audience. Bente literally took to the air, artists moved towards the edge of the stage and the Chasséveld repeatedly transformed into one moving crowd. Confetti, fire and the recognisable 538 production reveal the scale without losing the individual moments within it.
As darkness fell, the visual character changed. Stage lighting took over, DI-RECT introduced the energy of a live band and the final performances built towards a finale filled with light and fireworks. The resulting series shows more than who performed. It captures how eleven hours of 538 King’s Day felt: loud, fast, exuberant and constantly in motion.
